Service Description
Join Real History Walking Tours and Club BUSHY for a walking tour through Watsons Bay - a place full of precious urban ecologies and layered human history. Long before lighthouses and shipwrecks, this area - known as Kutti - was cared for by the Birrabirragal Clan, who have sustained a deep relationship with these coastal lands and waters. Guided by Ned from Real History Walking Tours (Landscape Architect and Historian), Erryn from BUSHY Landscapes (Bush Regenerator) and Justin BUSHY Landscapes (Ecologist and Landscape Architect), we’ll explore what this beautiful headland has to offer with a focus on historical and ongoing land management in one of the Eastern Suburbs’ last stands of remnant bushland. As we walk from the cliffs to the cove, we’ll uncover Watsons Bay’s rich and at times confronting history - from colonisation and shipwrecks, to wartime fears, cave dwellings, private zoos, and Sydney’s first lighthouse. Alongside these historical threads, we’ll consider the present-day landscape - how ecological knowledge and practices are helping to manage this exposed and sensitive coastline. We’ll discuss the future of Watsons Bay and the ongoing work required to protect its biodiversity and cultural values in the face of changing climate and urban pressures. About Club Bushy: Club BUSHY is a space for our community to come together and celebrate Sydney’s ecology! We’re curating experiences that foster a deeper connection to the land and to each other. We’ll hear from a range of experts and storytellers, share meals, and spend time outdoors together as we learn and grow. Club Bushy is an initiative created by BUSHY Landscapes that supports our mission to strengthen people’s connection with their local environment, empowering them to better understand and manage natural systems. We recognise a strong need for ecological restoration services to become more prevalent within the built environment. The residential sector, in particular, is in serious need of accessible, high-quality, science-led services that better support individuals to engage in conservation. We aim to address these issues with an integrated team of bush regenerators, ecologists, landscapers, horticulturalists, and designers.
