Where Every Step Tells a Story

Real History Walking Tours brings the past to life through the streets, buildings, landscapes, and stories of Sydney and regional New South Wales.

Our founder, Ned Dickson, started Real History Walking Tours at just 15 years old.

Driven by a lifelong passion for history, Ned launched his first walking tour in his hometown of Mudgee, where his family has lived since 1852. After moving to Sydney to study at university, he expanded the business by offering tours of Glebe and Watsons Bay.

As a descendant of three convicts, Ned was particularly drawn to the layered history of Sydney’s CBD. He wanted to uncover the forgotten stories behind some of Australia’s most historically significant places and share them in a way that felt engaging, accessible, and memorable.

What began as a single tour in Mudgee has grown into a team of four, with tours operating each week across several unique locations. Every experience follows a different path, combining fascinating stories with remarkable architecture, beautiful scenery, and history you can see and touch.

Discover the Stories Behind the Streets

Our walking tours explore the social, architectural, and cultural histories of Sydney and beyond.

Each tour is carefully researched and designed to reveal the people, events, myths, and lesser-known stories that have shaped its location. Along the way, you will discover important historical figures, unusual former residents, and the details that are often hidden in plain sight.

From Aboriginal history and convict uprisings to shipwrecks, subterranean tunnels, religious conflict, grand mansions, and industrial milestones, each tour offers a new perspective on a familiar place.

Whether you are drawn to the architecture, the scenery, or the stories themselves, you will leave with a deeper understanding of the places you have explored and may never see them in quite the same way again.

"A must-do in Sydney! I joined one of Ned’s walking tours of Watson’s Bay, and what a fantastic morning we had! He took us on the most beautiful walk from up on the headland all the way down right into Watson’s Bay. Ned was unbelievably knowledgeable and such a delight. Couldn’t recommend Ned’s tour more!"
